Which version of the Bible did John use for the verses?
Darnielle mentioned in an interview that his chief inspiration for the album was an evening reading the Bible found in a motel room drawer while on tour in Colorado. Assuming that the Bible in question had been placed by the Gideons International, it would have been a King James Version prior to 2013.
