Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music

The Smashing Pumpkins

About “Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music”

Smashing Pumpkins' sixth album and the final release until the project’s 2007 reformation.

The only physical release of the record as of 2016 is 25 vinyl copies pressed in 2000, some of which were given to fans with instructions to rip the album and distribute it for free online.

The album contains two sides: The first side having the 14 main tracks, while the other side containing alternate takes and B- Sides.

Lyrically, just like Machina I, the songs are told from the perspective of a fictitious and somewhat psychotic rock star named Zero (based on Corgan) who changes his name to Glass after hearing the voice of God through the radio waves. Within the conceptual framework, the band playing these songs are not the Pumpkins, but a caricature of the Pumpkins dubbed The Machines of God.
