Cloud Nine

The Temptations

About “Cloud Nine ”

Cloud Nine is the ninth solo studio album by The Temptations, released on February 17, 1969, via Motown’s subsidiary label Gordy Records. The album is the first solo Temptations album to feature Dennis Edwards, the replacement for David Ruffin who was fired the previous year due to disputes with group.

Sonically, Cloud Nine marks a shift from the group’s other albums, taking influence from Sly & The Family Stone’s more funky and psychedelic soul sound over the Motown Sound the group was known for.

Commercially, the album peaked at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart, where it would remain for thirteen weeks. It also peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200. The RIAA certified the album Gold in 1999, having sold over half a million copies.

Two singles were included in the album: “Cloud Nine” and “Run Away Child, Running Wild”, which both peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at #2 and #1 on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart respectively. “Cloud Nine” earned The Temptations their first Grammy Award after winning the award for “Best Rhythm & Blues Performance by a Duo or Group, Vocal or Instrumental”.
