About “Boo Boo”

After the 2015 release of the well-received What For?, Chaz Bear (aka Toro y Moi) dropped Boo Boo in July 2017 – along with an album stream uploaded to YouTube to celebrate its release.

While Bear centered What For? around a self-described “indie rock” sound, Boo Boo was a new sonic territory for the native South Carolinian. Longer, the 12-track record is also more mellow and its synths are darker & heavier; the ruminative “Embarcadero” is stereotypical of the album’s sound and might seem odd to fans of his more accessible, indie-pop works. However, with tracks like “Mirage” and “Girl Like You,” Boo Boo offers catchy melodies and playful hooks to go with the haunting synths of “W.I.W.W.T.W.”.

Toro y Moi is an ever-ambitious artist and each project is utterly unique. With Boo Boo listeners can expect an album filled with themes of rejection, romantic regret, and loneliness. Indeed, though it runs the gamut of emotions, Boo Boo is ultimately an album of contemplation and emotional longing.
