Weezer (The Red Album)

Weezer

About “Weezer (The Red Album)”

As Weezer’s sixth studio album, The Red Album was more experimental than ones in the past. For the first time, the album featured vocals from all four band members. Additionally, although Rivers Cuomo wrote most of the songs, the other band members were much more involved in the creative process. Many of the songs no longer follow the traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus format that most of Weezer’s earlier songs used.

Red had four singles. “Pork and Beans” was made successful through its music video featuring many YouTubers and references to popular 2008 YouTube videos. “Troublemaker” also featured a popular music video. “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)” takes on a unique sound, with many genres coming together in order to create the rambling song. Lastly, “Dreamin'” has been described as a symphonic-sounding song written in sonata form.

The Red Album did not do as well as past Weezer albums: it failed to reach Gold status and receiving very mixed reviews. It has been met with praise from NME and allmusiccom, and criticism from Tiny Mix Tapes and Pitchfork.

The Red Album is our boldest and bravest and showiest album. I know for a fact that if you have a red car, you’re more likely to get pulled over. That’s how the album feels to me. It’s breaking laws and speeding — getting into trouble.
