While Syd’s mental health was declining and his behaviour becoming more erratic as he was slowly driving himself to insanity, many of the members noted him having such a look in his eyes. Blackened eyes filled with the silent madness of a tortured individual.

The look in his eyes “like black holes in the sky” also refers to the large dilation of the pupils while tripping on LSD, Giving the appearance of large and endless black holes.

The fog refers to the religious teachings of the long-dead cleric (religious leader). The fog lifts (recedes) “right before” the subject’s eyes as death comes and he/she realizes there’s not actually an afterlife, not actually a reward, not actually a reason to be a suicide bomber in the first place.

“New York City Cops” is a fast-paced, punk blaster from The Strokes' debut album, Is This It. It departs stylistically from the rest of the more slowed down, almost apathetic feeling in songs such as the title track, “Someday,” and “Last Nite.” Instead, it travels through a Ramones-influenced, simpler style. Note that the Strokes eventually recorded a mash-up of some Ramones songs, as a b-side for the single Heart In A Cage:

“New York CIty Cops” was the B-side on the Hard To Explain single released in June 2001, and was included on the UK version of Is This It and the American vinyl pressings of the album, which were both released in August 2001, but when New York suffered the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001, it was thought of an inappropriate subject to include on the album, due to the death of police officers in rescue missions. As a result, the song was replaced with the track “When It Started,” which delayed the American release from September 25th until mid October.

The Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas said “12:51” was about “the moment right before you fuck.”

Lead guitarist Nick Valensi managed to painstakingly create the sound of a synthesized keyboard with his guitar for this song. However when a friend heard it, he responded with crushing logic, “Why didn’t he just play a keyboard?”

Destroyer’s Dan Bejar laying out some standard rock ‘n’ roll fantasies: hooking up with girls, snorting blow. Perhaps he’d like to do both at the same time?

About the realtion between drugs and Kaputt, Bejar told:

I can say that they definitely don’t play much of a role in my life at this point. Kaputt is a work of fiction. If drugs get mentioned, it’s because I want it to be a theme. The somnambulance was important.

when I think of drugs I think of someone on their deathbed or on a sickbed having visions of their life, their distant past, and maybe morphine plays a roll in that.
