Carmen’s life as a prostitute has led to her seeing some things that nobody should see. Prostitutes do not have glamorous lives as people may imagine.

The name ‘Carmen’ as well as the concept of the song is inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. In the “Wanted” poem within Lolita are the lines:

Dying, dying, Lolita Haze,
Of hate and remorse, I’m dying.

The structure and rhyming of the song is also similar to the poem.

Her fast lifestyle means she feels like she is being drained of life. Due to all of the drugs, alcohol and prostitute she probably is going to die very young.

Lana feels like her lover is there in spirit with her tonight.

Despite the fact that Lana has turned her back on god, she still feels like he has allowed her lover to be there with her.

She feels as if it doesn’t matter if she lives or dies, as she effectively was killed when her lover left her. If dying meant joining him she would be more than happy to go to heaven with him.

#Double Meaning!
- Going out out on the town sometimes can be a little bit awful sometimes – let’s be honest. Either there’s not the right people there or you just aren’t feeling the vibe on that particular day. Either way, you probably would have had a much better night in your house watching TV.

  • Nicole is also literally losing the night, when you drink alcohol in excess it can lead to a little bit of memory loss. So what’s the point of going out if you’re not going to remember anything?

The basement town refers to the fact that loads of nightclubs are in basements these days. So it seems that Nicole is just going from basement club to basement club to basement club, none of them being unique at all from the other.

It just doesn’t seem like the ‘right night’ for Nicole, at all, right now.

Lana likes to relate her body parts to foods

Here she says that her lips taste like fruit punch – likely due to the lip balm she puts on them. She tries to seduce this man by trying to sell her benefits to him.

However, in the context of the Lolita storyline, “fruit punch lips” could be referencing either the beverage itself or fruit punch lipgloss, which is not something you’d find on a sophisticated woman.

  • Peter Luger is a famous steakhouse in New York – the best NY steakhouse for 30 years – so it may seem like Billy isn’t working. When in fact he is just negotiating and grinding just as hard.

  • A luger is a World War Two pistol. This conveys the dangerous nature of Billy’s work – he has to carry a gun on him at all times.

Instead of completely revealing his emotions, Sampha just settles on telling her that he appreciates that she is here.

He tries to play it cool, but his emotions are getting the better of him. This may be a reference to the Macy Gray song “Glad You’re Here”.

This is a reference to Lou Reed’s “Walk On The Wild Side” that references indulging in one’s desiring and letting yourself roam free.

This could refer to the fact that Lana’s lover occasionally is not as spontaneous as she would like. He isn’t a spur of the moment kind of guy unlike Lana.

Lorde states that her friends can confide in her as she is Queen Bee. However, just what Lorde is queen of is revealed in this song.

On the other hand, she is saying that her lover trusts her enough so to tell her their fears, and that it doesn’t matter how much time she and this person spend together, it’ll never be enough.

Throughout the song Lorde tells the listener to play along which suggests that the listener is also part of Lorde’s group. Lorde’s group represents people who have realised the flaws in society and desire a change.

Lorde resigns solemnly to the fact that there will never be enough enlightened people to overpower society. The population of people who follow will always be less than the population that lead.
