Due to the high stress position Lorde feels she’s in, her heart is pumping extremely quickly.

This relates to electronics as electrical components can only take so much voltage and current. Lorde wonders if her heart can take more punishment or if it will fail to capacitate her sorrow.

Finally, the electronics of your heart is a metaphor for how society is turning us into robots. By rebelling, you are breaking out of their system, which is why they fall apart so fast.

Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.

-Oscar Wilde

Lana references a famous quote by Oscar Wilde, whereby it is detailed that life mirrors art.

Lana suggests that she has a “fake it till you make it” story. She started out as an unknown among millions of other hopeful young women in L.A., trying to project the appearance and attitude of a serious singer. Life imitates art because she ended up becoming famous and successful, even though her posing was initially just an act.

Lana may also mean that life is unique just as art is, and that life may not be perfect, yet it is still beautiful.

Mark wonders if it’s okay for his fellow band mate Tom DeLonge to write songs every night calling people homosexuals.

Probably not, but nevertheless, he writes a lot a songs about it:

I would like to find him Friday night hanging out with mom and trying on his father’s tights

This is slighty hypocritical as well as this is exactly what Mark is doing right now. He really loathes his girlfriend that he once loved.

He ask somebody else if they feel the same way he does about leaving school, when they disagree it makes him feel even more alone

He retreats back to his own solitude begrudgingly admitting that it’s “just another night alone like every other night*.
He’s accepted that he’s just going to be a lonely person from now on – there’s nothing he can do about it.

Fun fact: When sung live, the group usurps the final lines with “I guess it’s just another / I-had-sex-with-your-mother night alone”

If you are alone and you get injured you’ll have no way of getting any assistance, which is why you always have to surf with a buddy.

Rihanna is extremely famous so she’s on the road a lot, yet when she comes back home she always seems to end up back with him.

The train represents progress and this man seems to hold her back, she’s not going anywhere – it’s just a retrograde movement

At least one critic called out the difference between the video, which features Shakira and Rihanna getting hot and heavy, and the song itself, in which the singers pledge fealty to “that boy”:

Let’s not forget that the song itself is about a man, a fact made clear by the repeated use of male pronouns. In fact, the entire time that Shakira and Rihanna are writhing together on a striped mattress, they both repeatedly sing, “I’d do anything for that boy.” In case the blatant lack of interest in each other didn’t give it away, the lyrics make it crystal clear: it’s all about ‘that boy.’

This kind of performance doesn’t just demean lesbian sexuality, it demeans female sexuality as a whole…It’s hard for me to read the idea of sexual empowerment and freedom into Shakira and Rihanna’s semi-naked dancing when paired with the tired old narrative of ‘Oh look! I’ll touch another woman for you so I can be one of your pieces of candy!’

Play on the phrase “Flavour Of The Week”, which means to be interested in something right fleetingly. Right now Key is really into girls who are extremely promiscuous.

Yet he’s only going to be into them for a short time because there are so many other types of girls who want to be with him.

Could be a reference to the American H-fi song “Flavour of the Weak”.
