Lana’s got no one she can call her own. The night symbolizes life, and she feels as if she’s completely and utterly alone.

Lana is fully aware of her problems. She drives to escape being so alone and to get away from the people who know her. It is a vicious cycle of self-deprecation and escapism.

Lana is unable to cope with people knowing her too well, as it means that she learns to care for them. This makes it harder when they hurt her.

You told me you were good at runnin' away. Domestic life, it never suited you like a suitcase

Lana has a constant internal struggle between the good and bad within her, and finds she has lost control of herself, which is causing her to lose focus – she can’t function properly.

However, Lana’s war is internal — nobody knows of her problems, and this leads to her feeling more alone and more drained.

Lana is in a glass cage of emotion, her depression cannot escape, the only way for her to escape is to drive.

Her track “Get Free” off 2017’s Lust for Life album references this lyric. In it, she sings about “ridin' the ride” despite having a “war in her mind”. Although Lust for Life was significantly lighter than Born to Die, her same themes of feeling different than everyone else, and her repeated metaphor of riding away to escape pain and loneliness, still persevere.

Lana isn’t stopping to savour every moment in life. She’s living completely in the moment. It becomes that she is in the relationship for the brief joy it brings, knowing full well that it will end in a crash.

Her recklessness contrasts with the birds she sees as she speeds through the streets. The birds are calm and natural which, slightly aids her to slow down and actually think for once.

Lana has stated in an interview she find driving incredibly cleansing.

Lana rides in order to try and escape her life. It’s her only escape from her nightmares.

So she’s been out on the road because something has gone wrong and cannot cope with it. Similar to how Frank Ocean tries to swim far away from his life.

Imma try to swim from something bigger than me

Lana simply is trying to run away, she hopes that her past will not catch up with her. She often uses driving as a way to get away from her problems.

Lana explores the darker side of youth, the solitude and the hardship that some young people experience.

She names some “typical” traits of American youths, this depicts the American youth as frivolous, fun and juvenile.

Though this may be a criticism on how they also think they are better than everyone else as well.

The Crystal Method is also an American electronic duo. In one of their songs, “Falling Hard” the lyrics touch on a similar theme of meeting someone and falling in love with them and driving together. Lana seems to have many adventures with men that enjoy driving

Contrastingly, it’s a references to the drug crystal meth.

Lana just lusts after men with money, – a stereotype of women – and she doesn’t care how they got this money. She wants a fast lifestyle and she wants her “daddy” to pay for it. She wants “white” diamonds and “gold” jewellery.

Money is the anthem of success, so before we go out, what’s your address

White links to purity and gold is the colour of luxury. Lana wants a pure love that can provide her with a stable financial situation.

Furthermore, she wants to be with him forever until they’re old. The “white” meaning white hair due to ageing, and gold linking to “Golden Anniversary” (A 50 Year Old Marriage)

Lana Del Rey is referring to a time when she performed songs such as “Pawn Shop Blues” in the underground singer/songwriter scene in New York.

“Blues” is generally a fairly old genre, so Lana is tired of singing a genre which doesn’t sound fresh. Which also meant that she couldn’t succeed as an artist – Blues is not mainstream

She was getting tired of trying hard to improve yet she was making little career progress.

Blues is also singing about the hardships of life. Lana is tired of singing about the sad things that have happened to her and wants something happier.
