Even though he’s “wrong” he’s technically right. Some people say that The Others (or white walkers) bring the cold, others say when it’s cold, they come. The ones that came with the cold are the killers.

This could be foreshadowing and the introduction to the mother of the Stark children’s wolves before she dies. Those wolves seem to have a connection to the Stark child they belong to. For example: Robb is dead so his Direwolf, Grey Wind, is dead. Sansa was taken from her family by the Lannisters (though her family was involved), and her Direwolf, Lady, was killed for attacking a Lannister.

Or it could just be some random wolf and GRRM is setting the atmosphere or mood of the story.

The vaguely hinted at other things are in fact called “The Others” in the book, but on the TV show they haven’t used that term–perhaps because of The Others on LOST.

Gared, and the rest of the North, refuse to give a name to the “others.” Part of it is fear of being seen as a superstitious old woman. The other part demonstrates the power of names, as if calling them the “white walkers” will make them more real. (Voldemort anyone?)
