The narrator’s lover is coming to the Island on her ship. The rough seas represent struggles within a relationship, much like when a relationship is “on the rocks.” He implores her to look past these setbacks.

As bandleader Jack Barnett sang earlier:

“And the way to get there/Is going round in circles”

The Spiral referred to in the title is a sort of Labyrinth, which is the entrance to the album’s Island.

In Greek mythology, Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of thread to navigate through the Labyrinth, a “guided tour.”

Seems to be a reference to reincarnation, as the Island is implied to have certain spiritual/supernatural qualities. It “gave birth to the child” and he in turn “came back again.”

It seems as though the narrator has become some sort of omniscient presence, “the air” itself. Perhaps the “magic trick” referred to earlier. The Island seems to have some strange supernatural effect, like this one:

This sets the pattern for the rest of the song, “I am the [metaphor.]” A midwife is someone who specializes in delivering children. This line and the one above suggests that he is acting as a sort of conduit between two entities, likely his companion and the Island itself.

The theme of light is highly prevalent in this album, specifically lighthouses, because of their relation to islands, water, and ships.

As the narrator’s companion arrives in her ship, he is literally the instrument by which she finds her way.

A reference to the track “Spiral.”

It seems as though the Spiral is a sort of entrance into the Island. This line calls to mind the Labyrinth, a structure from Greek mythology built by Daedalus for King Minos, and where the Minotaur was housed. The romance of Ariadne and Theseus has much to do with the Labyrinth. Perhaps Barnett is drawing a comparison.
