He refers to legendary NBA small forward Bernard King. King was known for his post game, especially a deadly turnaround. He played till he was 37, even making an all-star game at 35, despite a sequence of crippling knee injuries.

Rozay, 38, is a shooter of a different kind…

He may also be making an allusion to Bernard King’s historic consecutive 50 point games, or “double nickels”. On a Texas road trip on January 31 and February 1, 1984, King made NBA history by becoming the first player since 1964 to score at least 50 points in consecutive games. King also wore jersey # 55.

Horribly, “Negro dogs”, usually bloodhounds, were frequently employed to hunt down and maul runaway slaves in the Old South. They were feared above all by the slaves they menaced.

Here Eric uses the hound dog as a metonym for all the grim realities of slavery.

T.I. remains loyal to the iconic American auto manufacturer. His history with Chevrolet goes back to his first album, when he proclaimed his allegiance in the song Heavy Chevys. In 2007 their affinity was commercialized when a censored version of T.I.’s hit Top Back was used in an ad for the–ironically fixed roof–Impala SS.

Within the year, this partnership came to a sudden end when T.I.’s gun charges induced Chevrolet to sever ties with him.
But Tip bears no grudge, even featuring a classic Chevy in his recent About The Money video.

The opening track of T.I.’s ninth studio album, King sets the stage for an LP of cinematic scope, and inimitably trap-based, yet notably soul-infused, production. Hi-hats rattle, samples croon, and T.I. spits a viciously lyrical double-time flow reminiscent of his younger days.

T.I was already looking forward to the finer things in life as a kid, like a convertible Porsche and a fake ID to drive it with. In this video T.I. talks about getting picked up in his Uncle Quentin’s turquoise Porsche Cabriolet, and his car, which he bought in ‘94.

A reference to Kendrick Lamar’s smash single “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, which features the once ubiquitous lyric

First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it

The song sold over 500,000 copies, with most of the profits accruing to Interscope Records.
Saigon holds this up as an example of the music industry profiting from immorality, but only a superficial and naive reading of the song could see in it a binge-drinking anthem. Listen closer, dig deeper, and one will perceive a delicately nuanced account of a battle against alcoholism.
