56 Nights Genius – 20 Best Albums of 2015

Initially Future’s 2015 studio album DS2 appeared to be the obvious choice for this list, but 56 Nights is trimmer (around half an hour), rawer, more visceral – every track is vital. Indeed, one of DS2’s strongest moments is gleaned from this street mixtape, not to mention “Fuck Up Some Commas” from Monster, and “Real Sisters” from Beast Mode.

I think this is a great album, even if DS2 is better, and if we want to maintain a rap presence it’s worth keeping.

Agree. I don’t think Drake, on music alone, had a strong year, but obviously he’s been a huge cultural figure. “Hotline Bling” deserves to make the list but there are better songs below it. Maybe #18th-ish?

What was pirate radio like? I guess that was mix show before mix show. Late night you would have to stay up to hear some of the grittier rap songs that you wouldn't hear throughout the day. Have to get your tape ready, cover the holes, push record, push pause for the commercials. I'm from that element of hip-hop. When you come from that deep in it you might always bump heads or conflict with a younger dude that's just going to a site and hearing this song or running to YouTube, or streaming, or however the ne...
