In California, you can get a learner’s permit at 15 ½, which lasts for five years. While that didn’t help Kendrick escape the life of poverty right away, (other than robbing a house and getting away with a vehicle) he used that experience later on. His major label debut was a retrospective tale of him as a 17 year-old, and it’s infamous for the van he “borrowed” from his mom, that’s also featured on the deluxe album cover.

Kendrick also released his first mixtape at 16 (as K-Dot.)

“Recorded portraits in front of sirens” could also relate to ‘Look Out For Detox" where you can hear the sirens come closer and closer and then he puts pressure on “fire”.
