No one else felt patronized as a kid when your parents gave you that “I whoop you because I love you” crap?

Well, this relationship went a little past that. Probably went into physical abuse moreso than discipline. But she’s excusing everything her husband does to her children with the fact that he’s simply being brutal to ensure that no one else ever will have right to judge him. Hopefully the whoopings will “whip” him into shape. In this line she is reassuring the child that his father still loves him.
