Jackson frequently makes use of juxtaposition in her songwriting. Here, salt in sugar and nails in roses are small bad things disguised by larger good things, while guilt in a killer is a small good thing in a bad thing – who really cares if your killer feels guilty afterwards?

In this instance, the juxtaposition serves to illustrate how Jackson felt homesick in her own home after giving birth.

This is a cheeky double-entendre, referencing both how Christian prayer is traditionally performed while kneeling, and kneeling to give oral sex.

These lines call back to the opening lines of the song, where “you” said that love requires hate. Jackson accepts that this might have been true for her up until this point, but becoming a parent will fundamentally change her.

This also continues the use of the moon imagery. A satellite is something that orbits something bigger, like the Moon to the Earth. Jackson’s unborn child will metaphorically orbit her.

The Moon is “waxing” when it is appearing to get bigger, i.e. during the time after a new moon but before the full moon. This is a metaphor for the expansion of Jackson’s waistline during pregnancy.

“Pregnant with the start” is a play on words — Jackson wrote this song while suffering from terrible morning sickness, so she was literally pregnant, but also metaphorically pregnant, in the sense that the process of becoming a mother held great meaning.

The Big Moon’s early songs, like “Cupid” or “Don’t Think”, often covered the debauchery of a youth without responsibility. But becoming a parent gives you the greatest responsibility a human can have — your child is totally dependant upon you, and you cannot let them down.

Frank first moved to London to study at the London School of Economics. The LSE has a halls in High Holborn, which is near to Soho, but this is generally saved for postgraduates. The University of London, of which LSE is a part, has an intercollegiate hall called, erm, College Hall, to the north in Bloomsbury. But Bloomsbury is a quieter, upmarket part of town, while Soho is the entertainment district and much more trendy.

Frank’s discography is littered with love songs dedicated to failed relationships, with “Wherefore Art Thou Gene Simmons” and “Casanova Lament” particularly dedicated to it.

The extended metaphor compares love to music (another common theme in Frank’s music!). Casual fans of an artist tend to listen to singles collections and best-ofs, with hardcore fans diving into rarities. For his part, Frank had released four b-sides collections at the side of this release.

Family trees with lots of divorce and re-marriage can be quite complicated.

As you’re probably aware, a (first) cousin is the child of your aunts and uncles. They share a set of grandparents with you, but don’t have the same parents. A half-cousin shares exactly one grandparent – they’re the child of a parent’s half-sibling (see image below). Contrastingly, step-cousins aren’t blood relatives. They can be the step-children of a parent’s sibling, the children of the step-sibling of a parent, or the children of a sibling of a step-parent.

In many families, these would all just be called “cousins”, but there might still be sensitivities that new family members will have to navigate.

These lines were quoted against Oscar Wilde at his 1895 trial. Wilde was in a relationship with Douglas despite homosexuality being illegal, and had written to Douglas expressing his admiration for Two Loves.

Questioned about his understanding of these lines, Wilde said:

The love that dare not speak its name" in this century… is that deep spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect. It dictates and pervades great works of art, like those of Shakespeare and Michelangelo, and those two letters of mine, such as they are… It is beautiful, it is fine, it is the noblest form of affection. There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an older and a younger man, when the older man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him. That it should be so, the world does not understand. The world mocks at it, and sometimes puts one in the pillory for it.

Consequently, “the love that dare not speak its name” became a common euphemism for the love of one man for another.

This line is reminiscent of “the love that dare not speak its name”, a phrase originating from “Two Loves” by Lord Alfred Douglas, and popularised after Oscar Wilde invoked it when put on trial for his homosexuality.

Both Bowie and Bolan were bisexual, and in the early 70s same-sex attraction was still heavily stigmatised.
