Confirmation bias causes us to discard information that goes against our existing beliefs. We even choose our friends and hobbies according to our existing beliefs.

Many belief systems preach the value of freedom: we need to be able to make autonomous decisions without interference. Ironically, once we are welded to our ideas, confirmation bias reduces our freedom to choose them, and even controls huge amount of our daily lives.

It’s like when Socrates called himself ignorant just so the other person showed his own ignorance by rendering what should be right or wrong but, in the case, the “Freedom Preachers” who taught liberty are shown as clowns in the end, chained to their own arrogance.

Officially released the day before the inauguration of President Trump, “I Give You Power” was originally announced as a charity single rather than the first promotional single for Arcade Fire’s fifth studio album. Live versions had been floating around the internet since May 2016.

In the studio version, Win Butler provides call-and-response vocals with R&B alto Mavis Staples over a dance beat that takes the sound of Reflektor to the extreme. The hook is reminiscent of “Gold Digger” by Kanye West, but the huge organ roots the song to Neon Bible.

The tree is a metaphor for American prosperity. During his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly asserted that America was being undermined by Far Eastern countries, particularly China. He has labelled China a “currency manipulator”, accused them of fabricating global warming, and compared Sino-American trade to rape.

The creepy imagery of scarecrows in the night acknowledges that economic impotency is scary, but the lazy cliché ridicules Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric. There aren’t really scarecrows eating your fruit.

Scarecrows are insubstantial and lack integrity. This is ironic, because the speaker is himself more concerned about money than integrity.

This mirrors the “Here, There, and Everywhere” interpolation from the released version of “White Ferrari”. The first verse of the Beatles song begins:

Here, making each day of the year
Changing my life with the wave of her hand
Nobody can deny that there’s something there
There, running my hands through her hair

Like McCartney on that song, Ocean is enjoying his lover’s presence. Unlike McCartney, he both addresses them directly, which humanises them, and uses gender-neutral language reflecting his own bisexuxality.

One day, at the peak of Rock Genius, a new user appeared on the leaderboards with about 2,000 IQ on his first day. All the Rock Genius mods – there were about seven or eight at the time – lost their shit. This was incredible. His annotations were a bit long and often in the first person, but there were so many

A couple of days later, all annotations reviewed, he was made an editor. A few months later, he was a mod. A few years later, he was hired.

Ewok is a machine. He does everything, and he does it incredibly. He cleans pages, he turns new users into editors, and he shows up all over the site pushing new initiatives. There is an east wind blowing, and its name is Ewok.

SameOldShawn is the reason for all the good things about Genius. This is only a slight exaggeration.

Annotation wise, Shawn massively drove up standards while also contributing in huge volumes. He has over 40,000 Jay Z IQ and for most of Genius' history he had one of the two highest IQ scores. He also drove to eradicate hate speech from Genius' forums and raise moderator standards.

Although rap was Shawn’s first love, he dabbled in annotating Rock, particularly classic blues. He oversaw Rock Genius from afar between Spinelli’s departure and Shawn’s own shock departure in mid 2014.
