In the British 2016 EU referendum, “let’s take back control” was the most resonant slogan of the successful Vote Leave campaign. This spoke to people who were worried the EU was gaining too much control over British law.

Hoop plays off this slogan, but is speaking to a more fundamental loss of control. We rely on machines for all sorts of basic processes: they control traffic, open doors, and send and receive information. While they make a lot of things easier, we’ve raged at red lights, at doors that don’t recognise our key card, and at computers that don’t work properly, and wished we could just do what we want without the machine getting in our way.

“Computer says no” was the catchphrase of Carol Beer, played by David Walliams on BBC sketch show Little Britain.

It’s now widely used whenever someone says they can’t help you because the computer won’t let them. This is very frustrating, particularly when the real problem is that they’re just not thinking about how they could get it done without the computer.

People (usually straight men) whose sexual or romantic advances get turned down sometimes complain about being in the “friendzone” which is often criticised for perpetuating male entitlement. If your friends don’t want to date you or have sex with you, they’re not being unfair, you just want different things.

One of the stereotypes associated with the “nice guys” who complain about getting stuck in the friendzone is that they play a lot of video games. With over 30 million units sold, Diablo III is one of the bestselling video games of all time.

By channeling the stereotype of a sexless gamer, Thundercat self-deprecatingly pokes fun at the idea of the “friendzone.”

“Safe spaces” allow people to be around like-minded people who won’t challenge their fundamental views or attack who they are. While these can be a good way to allow controversial ideas to be expressed to a supportive audience, they aren’t going to change the views of people who are opposed to you, and they aren’t going to stop Trump. If you want to make his life difficult, get up, get out, and get angry.

Frank previously used barricades to represent protest on 2008’s “Love Ire & Song”:

If it’s still going to hurt in the morning
And a better plan’s yet to get forming
Then where’s the harm spending an evening
In manning the old barricades?

Although public backlash caused Frank to dial back the political content in his songs, he’s not lost his passion for protesting against things he thinks are wrong, like the Trump presidency.

“A Change Is Gonna Come” is a 1964 soul song by Sam Cooke. Inspired by a lifetime of racism, the song became a Civil Rights Anthem and is widely regarded as Cooke’s masterpiece.

While Cooke was ultimately optimistic that segregation would be abolished (he was shot dead before the song could be released), Turner accepts that Trump’s presidency means changes that he won’t like. However, that doesn’t mean he has to accept them.

America is becoming more politically polarised. 43% of Republicans and 38% of Democrats have “very unfavorable” views of the other party.

There’s also a split on religious lines. The non-religious are disproportionately likely to support the Democrats, along with other non-Christians and Hispanic Catholics.

Many billion-dollar industries have a negative impact on society. Alcohol, cigarettes, fast food and pharmaceuticals can cause severe damage and even death if used in excess, while other industries release huge volumes of pollution.

We praise the people who managed to solve these problems, but it’s rarely done out of the goodness of their heart. For example, drug manufacturers patent their products. This helps them make their money back, but it also means that people have to pay to get it, inevitably locking some out. Pharmaceutical companies are routinely criticised for this, although the arguments are complex.

FJM is pointing out the irony of showering people with money for solving problems that only exist because we showered people with money.

Unfortunately, the biological differences between the sexes have contributed to centuries of gender inequality.

Menstruation is the leading cause of iron deficiency anaemia, because the menstrual lining contains hemoglobin. Meat is a good source of iron, but in a hunter-gatherer society, getting some means leaving your children. Babies are completely vulnerable if abandoned. As women produce milk, it makes sense for them to stay and feed the baby rather than go out hunting.

Today, the biological pressures have largely been eased. There’s plenty of iron-rich food at the supermarket, and we can keep milk in the fridge. Nonetheless, women still do most of the childcare. In the final line, Tillman’s quip calls to mind not only this, but also the fact that women have to endure menstruation, pregnancy and the pain of childbirth just to procreate.

Walking on two legs requires a narrow birth canal. Being smart requires a big brain. A big brain requires a big head. To get around this problem, humans give birth to underdeveloped young who can’t care for themselves. This is known as the obstetrical dilemma hypothesis. It’s popular and compelling, but not necessarily correct.

FJM uses this as a metaphor for our knowledge. We’re born fragile, helpless, and impressionable. We’re at the mercy of others to care for us and educate us. If we’re educated by people who can’t or won’t tell us the truth, then we are doomed to remain “babies”.
