This is reminiscent of Martin Niemöller’s speeches about the Holocaust, which became famous when reworked into poetry:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me–and there was no one left to speak for me.

It could easily have been Heems' father who was deported, because his Sikhism, brown skin, and broken English make it clear that he is not like other Americans. It wasn’t, though, and so Heems is much more willing to accept the racism that doesn’t directly affect him.

There’s a tension between making it obvious that you fit in, and trying so hard to fit in that you don’t fit in at all.

Heems captures this tension by talking about yelling “quietly and calmly”, even though yelling is inherently loud and passionate. The Indians are desperate to fit in, but know that if they try too hard, they’ll be even more suspicious.

Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, is generally regarded to be one of the very best in the world. He made a few uncharacteristic mistakes early in the season, and then got injured.

Their second choice goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic, took over. Begovic was previously Stoke City’s goalkeeper, and one of the better goalkeepers in the league. This summer, he decided to move to a bigger club. He was linked to Arsenal and Liverpool, where he would have been first choice, but moved to Chelsea instead. He’s a great second choice, in other words.

FFP only affects clubs playing in the two continental competitions, the Champions League and the Europa League. In England, that’s the top 7 teams. The other 13 don’t need to worry.

This is because English teams negotiate collectively, whilst in Spain, every team negotiates their own deal. Barcelona and Real Madrid have international fanbases, and so can negotiate much higher payouts than even Valencia or Atlético Madrid, let alone the bottom-half sides.

This sort of problem occurs all the time, though usually with non-profits rather than businesses. Lobby too effectively, and your reason to exist and solicit donations will disappear. Usually, organisations respond by shifting their goals, or by claiming the problem is worse than it appears.

As for rape whistles specifically, they’re not especially effective – most rapes are not committed in public.
