If there is possibly someone out there that’s better for you, then why stay in your current relationship? The entire notion of “star-crossed lovers” or “fate” becomes obsolete.

An hourglass, unlike clocks, measures a set amount of time (however much sand it has). It makes the passing of time visual.

She relates the temporary and fixed nature of the hour glass to the ephemeral and fleeting relationships. The relationships fall apart, sinking into despair and ending.

Yet she knows that she’ll make it through, so the broken romance is not a need to worry.

“Every Open Eye” is of course the title of the album, and this is a clear reference to it.

In a metaphorical sense, “every open eye” could refer to the eye of a hurricane, representing Lauren’s clarity about her relationship’s problems.

The open eye shelters both of them from all of their conflicts, and just barely preserves their love. It happens again and again, in song after song on the album. No wonder it’s the album title.

Green sometimes is the color of envy. This association started with the Greeks.

Tkay’s (or Troye’s) lover had green eyes, but that color lost its attractiveness after the breakup. Their partner went to someone else and made them jealous in turn.

Contrary to Of Empress' sarcasm, water is for drinking too. It happens that her lover sips too much vino tinto, and designate H2O to bathing. Lack of water drinking combined with alcoholism makes for relationship problems.

Throw in the fact that controlled substances like marijuana can kill motivation, and no wonder these indulgences bug her so much.

In Mexico, where she wrote this song, tap water is not for drinking and can making someone sick, and is usually reserved for cleaning.

He almost rides on his own “started from the bottom” phrase – but he refrains from posing. He has most of nothing because he has almost nothing. That nothing’s his lack of stardom and even money.

He personifies the world because it’s almost cosmic how he grew up in poverty. It’s a fact of life to him, but he won’t let that defeat him.
