About Andrew Thomson

The frontman and lyricist behind the breakout basement-show-punk band Single Mothers: Andrew Thomson, Drew Thomson; it seems like he whimsically pastes either moniker to his already discrete releases. This doesn’t make for a burgeoning fandom; Thomson instead seems to instead be doing his damnedest to keep his work from arriving to the public ear with too much polish, too much mainstream appeal, or at all seeming to come from anything but its totally uncut, raw punk influence. His solo debut came, (out of a three year hiatus from the band), in 2013 as a four-song EP, Honesty Is A Confidence Problem, from Swastika, Ontario, Canada, where Andrew had retired from the career he left in its infancy to prospect for gold. Thomson went on to return to Single Mothers, and they toured and released their debut studio album Negative Qualities. In 2014, he released another two-song self-titled EP, though for free: “Saturday Night/Sunday Morning” and “Oxy”. Since then, Google searches abound take us down the rabbit hole, and no less, but not without plenty of reassuring evidence that Drew has an affinity for putting out music, and we need only remain patiently diligent in our own pursuits if we are to really enjoy and appreciate his artistry.

Thomson will see himself widely beloved forever by fans for his ability to haunt the audience with grimacing, self-loathing verses of hurt, resentment, regret, sorrow, ecstasy, delirium, intoxication, lust; and though at first glance Thomson is simply drifting in the vast and ever deeply disappointing sea of Punk artists completely removed from the roots of punk influence, we will all find ourselves roused by his vulnerability. Rife with unabashedly anecdotal songwriting that is imagerially self-incriminating but indisputably provocative, Thomson has displayed a conviction to permanently serve as the benchmark by which we can always and proudly stand.
