Cabaret Voltaire

Cabaret Voltaire was an English industrial and electronic band from Sheffield begun by Chris Watson, Stephen Mallinder, and Richard H. Kirk. They were at the forefront of the early industrial scene in the mid-1970s, notable for their use of tape loops. Watson left the group in 1981, leaving the remaining members to turn in a more mainstream, dance-oriented direction. The single “Sensoria” off 1984’s Micro-Phonies, along with its music video, gained popularity.

In the late ‘80s and early '90s, the group took a turn into a new direction toward house and techno. Cabaret Voltaire broke up in 1995, but was restarted by Kirk in 2009, who continued to use the Cabaret Voltaire name until his death in 2021.
