Soft Cell is an English synthpop duo who originated in 1978 consisting of vocalist Marc Almond and instrumentalist David Ball. They are best known for their 1981 cover of Gloria Jones‘ song “Tainted Love”, which reached No. 1 in the UK Single Chart in 1981, and No. 8 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1982.
