About Videosex

Videosex were a band formed in 1983 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. One of the earlier synth bands from former Yugoslavia, they were comprised of Anja Rupel (vocals, flute), Matjaž Kosi and Nina Sever (keyboards), Janez Križaj (bass), and Iztok Turk (drums). Nina Sever was replaced by Goran Lisica-Fox on keyboards from 1986 – 1989 until Sever returned later in 1989. The group disbanded in 1992.

Their first single, “Moja mama” – originally by Slovene punk band Kuzle – was released in 1983 and became an instant hit for the band. In 1984, they released their first album “Videosex ‘84” which also became popular. The album was known for its modern, high energy sound and also garnered some controversy for containing sexual lyrics in tracks like “Ana” and “Videosex”. The album contains the band’s most well known track, “Detektivska priča”, which became a hit all across Eastern Europe with its video being heavily featured on TV shows like “Hit meseca” in Yugoslavia. The track remains a staple in Yugopop enthusiasts’ playlists today.

The band pursued a very different direction for their next album, “Lacrimae Christi” (“Tears of Christ” in Latin) which traded away much of the bright synth-pop sounds for a sound inspired by electroswing and dark cabaret.

This jazzy, swing-influenced sound would continue, though in a lighter form, on the band’s first and only EP, “Svet je zopet mlad”, released in 1987.

In 1991, the band released their final album, “Ljubi in sovraži” before disbanding in 1992. The album has a colder, electronic sound to it, featuring some early trip-hop and experimental influences. It is also the band’s longest album, at over 57 minutes long, the band’s only album to feature English lyrics, and the band’s first album to be published on the CD format.

Most of the band’s material and some unreleased tracks were made available in 1997 on the dual CD compilation album “Arhiv”, and the band’s first two albums were remastered and re-released on CD in 2009.
