Help get me started in Rock.

I’m coming here from the Rap side of Genius, and I want to expand my music library, and I thought I’d start with Rock, so help me out. Where do I start? Who is the Kanye West of Rock? What’s the best kind of Rock to start with? I’d appreciate if you guys could suggest some albums for me to check out, based on what’s popular over here on the Rock side.

I’d start with AM by the Arctic Monkeys. Best album of 2013 imo.

Here’s a blog piece called “Rock Discovery for Hip-Hop Heads” and check out the best albums of 2013 here

Otherwise check out this forum and the Rock homepage for new stuff.

Who is the Kanye West of Rock?

That would be Josh Homme, at least for the rants. He also makes great music. Check Like Clockwork by his main band, Queens of The Stone Age and his supergroup with Dave Grohl)Foo Fighters, Nirvana) and Paul Jones( Led Zeppelin).

Some rock/indie/alt stuff I’m listening to right now

Some of my favourite artists- Mumford and Sons, Tame Impala, MGMT, Fleet Foxes, Frank Turner, James Blake, Daft Punk

Try The Zombies' Odessey and Oracle for some older stuff. I’m not big on classic rock, someone else please fill it in.

Yeah this was very random I’m done

If you want the Yeezy equivalent, the best I can point you toward is Paul McCartney, esp. during his Beatles days. The band changed sonically with every album.

If you’re coming into this as a hip-hop head, I would start with rap-rock fusions and ease your way into it. That said, since the 90s produced many caustic and ill-advised combinations of the two, here’s a great combo:

I am sorry, I’m gonna throw loads of information at you:

The Kanye West of rock is one of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, or Damon Albarn.

Check out The Beatles' classic run:

  • Rubber Soul
  • Revolver
  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (overrated, but still not to be missed)
  • The Beatles (The White Album)
  • Abbey Road

There are probably 3 of the 5 best rock albums in there.

Then:

  • George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Traveling Wilburys Volume 1
  • John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band and Imagine (and Double Fantasy and Milk And Honey)
  • Paul McCartney’s Chaos And Creation In The Backyard

Bowie’s classics:

  • Hunky Dory
  • The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars
  • Diamond Dogs
  • Station To Station
  • Low
  • Heroes
  • Scary Monsters
  • The Next Day

Albarn:

  • Blur’s Modern Life Is Rubbish
  • Blur’s Parklife
  • Blur’s The Great Escape
  • Blur’s Blur
  • Gorillaz’s Demon Days
  • The Good, The Bad And The Queen’s The Good The Bad And The Queen
  • Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach

… as well as the soundtrack for his opera, Doctor Dee.

Other really essential albums include Radiohead’s OK Computer, The Who’s Quadrophenia, and Arcade Fire’s Funeral.

What are a few rock songs you like? I’m sure you’ve heard atleast one that really caught your ear. I’d start from there. The sound of that song that you liked falls into a certain subgenre of rock and we can suggest similar bands with that sound.

I feel like rock is wayyyy too broad to just start throwing bands at you.

Start with Humbug tho lol

Nah start from the earliest demos and go all the way to the present. Definitely worth it. Quite literally life changing. Not a bad song in the bunch.
