Rock songs...

Always liked Rock but never really really got into it. Im not into that Heavy Metal/Screamo stuff. What are some Good/Classic — Rock/Alternative Rock songs or Groups would you recommend? Ex: Queen, Oasis, Nirvana, MGMT, etc?

You should try Red hot chili peppers, AC/DC, The Offspring, Scorpions…

If you like Queen, check out David Bowie, T. Rex, Rush, Elo, and Led Zeppelin (depending on which Queen you like!).

If you like Oasis, stop liking Oasis and like Blur instead. If that suggestion is unhelpful (sorry), check out 10 years of imitating British bands, like The Libertines, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, and The Vaccines.

If you like Nirvana, check out bands like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, as well as Guns N' Roses. If you want to be more adventurous, Dinosaur Jr. and Pixies.

If you like MGMT, check out Django Django, Local Natives, The Horrors, and Friendly Fires.

Damn @Vesuvius killed it. I’m gonna check out a bunch of those bands I don’t know.

My biggest suggestion is Pearl Jam. I loooove PJ. Check out the Foo Fighters too, not quite as “classic” but still in that late 90s early 2000s area.

Accidentally linked to the wrong artist there – Electric Light Orchestra rather than Elo.

@BennySwans now I’m thirsty…

April 23rd, 2014

@BennySwans Imagine if he’d been popping “The Universal” instead! I shudder to think how amazing AM would have been.

@Vesuvius what’s the order from best to worst Blur albums? I only have their greatest hits (hides in shame)

April 23rd, 2014

@BennySwans Hard to say, because it really depends on which side of the pond you’re on. Greatest Hits is a good move.

Best is either Parklife or Blur (Parklife was their first undeniable classic, but Blur made them big in America).
IMO second best (after Parklife) is The Great Escape, but Albarn has disavowed it.
Fourth is probably Think Tank, which is a good bridge between Blur and Gorillaz.
Then there’s not much between 13 and Modern Life Is Rubbish, unless you strongly prefer their earlier or later stuff.
Then Leisure is last.

Also check out Gorillaz if you haven’t already, and The Good The Bad And The Queen. And Coxon’s solo stuff is supposed to be really good, I’ve never really given it a chance though.

Radiohead, Iron Maiden, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down.

@Black_Flower These are amazing bands but he was saying that he wasn’t interested by metal so System, RATM and Maiden may be too hard

If you are not already familiar with the Arctic Monkeys, start out with the album Favourite Worst Nightmare, followed by Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not. These two albums are fantastic, in my opinion; they also serve as a great foundation for getting to know the Arctic Monkeys.

Another band that is fantastic (and underrated) is Cage the Elephant. I highly recommend checking out Thank You, Happy Birthday and their newest album, Melophobia. I think you would like the song “Aberdeen” — the song’s name is an allusion to the birthplace of Kurt Cobain. Also, Cage the Elephant have toured with The Foo Fighters (the lead singer is Dave Grohl, who was in his early days the drummer in Nirvana).

It makes me so happy to know that you like MGMT. I am a huge fan, and I would recommend listening to Tame Impala (similarly psychedelic), Pink Floyd (similarly experimental), Led Zeppelin (MGMT said in an interview that they aspire to emulate this band), and The Flaming Lips (MGMT has been influenced by them).

Now I feel like listing some bands that I feel you would enjoy.

The Doors, The Violent Femmes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Vampire Weekend (THEY ARE THE LIGHT OF MY LIFE, I KID YOU NOT), Interpol, Modest Mouse, Vance Joy, The Strokes (!!!), The Killers, The Smiths, The Cure, Pearl Jam, and The Offspring.

I have so many more suggestions, please let me know if you want more/more specific music-listening advice!
