Afraid Lyrics
I wish I was smarter
I got so lost on the shore
I wish I was taller
Things really matter to me
[Pre-Chorus 1]
But I put my face in tomorrow
I believe we're not alone
I believe in Beatles
I believe my little soul has grown
[Chorus 1]
And I'm still so afraid
Yes, I'm still so afraid
Yeah, I'm still so afraid
On my own
On my own
[Verse 2]
What made my life so wonderful?
What made me feel so bad?
I used to wake up the ocean
I used to walk on clouds
[Pre-Chorus 2]
If I put faith in medication
If I can smile a crooked smile
If I can talk on television
If I can walk an empty mile
And I won't feel afraid
No, I won't feel afraid
I won't be, be afraid anymore
[Outro]
Anymore
And then I just won't be afraid
Anymore
And then I just won't be afraid
About
… One of the songs on the new album is called “Afraid.” I use the line “I believe in Beatles” for precisely the same point. The Beatles could‘ve been anybody—they’re just the most obvious symbol. So I’m using that “I believe in Beatles” as being like, Why can’t we have something like that now? I’m just afraid that the only way I can do it now is by corrupting or perverting all I really feel and then I’ll be able to exist. I won’t be afraid.
And there’s one song on the album that seems to address those fears, a song called Afraid, which is– laughter– or is that taken too literally? You are afraid?
I’m not pliant today am I? That actually is probably the one song on the album that I don’t see as being representative of me… only because that particular character, the progenitor of that particular song, is talking in terms of how as long as he goes along with the sheep-like mentality of everybody else he won’t feel afraid; he believes that his security will be bought if he plays the game, so to speak.
