‘No Excuses’ is about lead singer Layne Staley’s battle to overcome his heroin addiction. Another theme is Cantrell’s unstable relationship with Layne as well as Cantrell coming to Layne’s aide even if they grow apart. The band became inactive 2 years later when his drug problem became too troublesome. Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002.
