Actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who portrays Carlton in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, spoke with Variety about the origin of the dance. The scene where it happens, the stage directions just say “Carlton dances”. Ribeiro says “It was never even intended to be funny; it was just that he was dancing.” He took inspiration from Courtney Cox dancing in Bruce Springteen’s Dancing In The Dark music video as well as Eddie Murphy’s “White Man Can’t Dance” joke:
