[Verse 1] I've been caught stealin', once when I was 5 I enjoy stealin', it's just as simple as that Oh well, it's just a simple fact When I want something, man, I don't wanna pay for it
[Verse 2] Yeah, my girl, she's one too, she'll go and get her a skirt Stick it under her shirt, she grabbed a razor for me And she did it just like that When she wants something, man, she don't wanna pay for it
“Been Caught Stealing” topped Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart for 4 weeks in 1990.
Perry Farrell has, onstage, claimed that this song is autobiographical, that he gets a thrill from stealing, himself.
He’s also advocated unprotected sex, talked about enjoying hard drugs, and other taboo subjects. But later he claimed he never intended people to take it seriously:
“I didn’t get into this to make sermons or set up structures for others to live by. My intent has nothing to do with teaching. It’s to amuse myself on this completely boring planet.”
