Undone (The Sweater Song) Lyrics
Oh, hey brah, how we doin' man?
Alright
It's been a while man, life's so rad
This band's my favorite man, don't ya love 'em?
Yeah
Aw man, you want a beer?
Alright
Aw man, hell brah, this is the best man
I'm so glad we're all back together and stuff
This is great, man
Yeah
Hey, did you know about the party after the show?
Yeah
Aw man, it's gonna be the best, I'm so stoked
Take it easy, brah
[Verse 1]
I'm me, me be, goddamn, I am
I can sing and hear me, know me
[Chorus]
If you want to destroy my sweater
Hold this thread as I walk away
[Spoken Word: Mykel Allen & Karl Koch]
Hey, what's up?
Not much
Um, did you hear about the party?
Yeah
I think I'm gonna go but, um, my friends don't really wanna go
Could I get a ride?
Oh no, it go, it gone, bye-bye (Bye)
Who I? I think, I sink, and I die
[Chorus]
If you want to destroy my sweater (Woah, woah, woah, woah)
Hold this thread as I walk away (As I walk away)
Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked
Lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I've come undone
[Guitar Solo]
[Chorus]
If you want to destroy my sweater (Woah, woah, woah, woah)
Hold this thread as I walk away (As I walk away)
Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked
Lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I've come undone
[Outro]
(I don't want to destroy your tank top)
If you want to destroy my sweater
(Let's be friends and just walk away)
Hold this thread as I walk away
(Hate to see you lying there in your Superman skivvies)
Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked
Lying on the floor, lying on the floor, I've come undone
About
“Undone – The Sweater Song” was Weezer’s first single off their self-titled 1994 debut album.
Frontman Rivers Cuomo has commented on the song to Rolling Stone:
“‘The Sweater Song’ was the first Weezer song I ever wrote, back in 1991,” Cuomo says. “I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you’re just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn’t until years after I wrote it that I realized it’s almost a complete rip-off of ‘Sanitarium’ by Metallica. It just perfectly encapsulates Weezer to me – you’re trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously.
Cuomo has also said {citation needed}:
“Undone” is the feeling you get when the train stops and the little guy comes knockin' on your door. It was supposed to be a sad song, but everyone thinks it’s hilarious.

In an interview with Billboard on the 25th anniversary of The Blue Album, Patrick Wilson shares his view on the song:
That was another one that came fully assembled. I don’t think we’ve ever not played that song since the start. Our first show was a place called Raji’s in Hollywood (in March 1992). We were playing with Keanu Reeves’ band Dogstar. There were quite a few people there, and I remember thinking, “We must be killing it!” Of course, they were all there for Keanu. But I remember we ended that set with me on guitar and Rivers on drums, playing “M.E.” by Gary Numan, and I thought it was one of the greatest moments of my life! I didn’t get speak to Keanu at the time, but if I saw him today, I would tell him I enjoyed the John Wick films very much!
