[Verse 1] You try to lie, I can see that you don't need me (Need me, don't need me, need me, don't need me) All of your words, they've been cursed with dishonesty (With dishonesty, with dishonesty)
[Pre-Chorus] Take it from the girl you claim to love You're gonna get some bad karma I'm the one who had to learn to build a heart made of armor From the girl who made you soup And tied your shoes when you were hurting You are not deserving, you are not deserving
[Chorus] (Why would you stay?) ('Cause I'm drowning for ya) I can see that you wanted me cold (Caught in the way) ('Cause I'm...) You're so bold while you're watching me moan
[Outro] (Why would you stay?) Can you follow me out to the water? I can show you we're sinking deeper Let me know 'Cause I'm drowning for ya (Caught in the way) Can you follow me out to the water? I can show you we're sinking deeper Let me know 'Cause I'm drowning for ya (Holding out, like you could pull...) Can you follow me out to the water? I can show you we're sinking deeper Let me know 'Cause I'm drowning for ya (Holding out, like you could pull me down) Can you follow me out to the water? I can show you we're sinking deeper Let me know 'Cause I'm drowning for ya ('Cause I'm drowning for ya)

Drowning was inspired by Banks' best friend, who she said
was having a hard time with someone. I’m able to write about it because I can connect it with my own experiences. It frustrates me so much and saddens me so much because I’ve gone through that as well. I know what it’s like. That first break up that I told you about? [In reference to the man that inspired her song Before I Ever Met You. That was eight years ago. I still write about him. I feel it so hard.
