Real American Lyrics
When it comes crashing down and it hurts inside
You gotta take a stand it don't help to hide
If you hurt my friends, then you hurt my pride
I gotta be a man
I can't let it slide
[Chorus]
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
[Verse 2]
I feel strong about right and wrong
And I don't take trouble for very long
I've got something deep inside of me
Courage is the thing that keeps us free
[Chorus]
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
If you hurt my friends then you hurt my pride
I gotta be a man I can't let it slide
[Chorus]
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
I am a real American
Fight for the rights of every man
I am a real American
Fight for what's right
Fight for your life
About
Written by 70s rock musician Rick Derringer (who also wrote “Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo” and played on “Hang On Sloopy”), “Real American” was originally intended for the U.S. Express, the tag team of Mike Rotunda and Barry Windham. The duo had a generic “patriotic American” gimmick, and were using Born in the U.S.A. as their theme music until Derringer was hired to write “Real American”.
Barry Windham left the WWF and the music was given to Hulk Hogan, who was in the middle of a meteoric rise to fame.
The rest is essentially history. The song is a classic 80s anthem, big and bold and unmistakably awesome. It’s as synonymous with Hulk Hogan as headbands, ripped muscle shirts, and “Lemme tell ya somethin', brother!”
