While working on the album Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen was influenced by the music of the New York City synth punk band Suicide. Out of all the songs on Nebraska, “State Trooper” shows the influence of Suicide most explicitly in its sparse and dark sound. The howling noise that Bruce Springsteen makes at the end of the song sounds very similar to the howling in Suicide’s song “Frankie Teardrop.” “Frankie Teardrop” is a song that explores the dehumanization of factory work and Vietnam war combat. These are two themes that are often explored in Bruce Springsteen’s songs, so it is fitting that this song would have an impact on him.
