Echoing the first verse (where she admits her lack of regret), she admits her lack of foresight. The relationship was so sudden, passionate, and spontaneous that there were no thoughts about it being long-lasting. If the relationship started off as just cheating, she may have thought it wouldn’t last long.

As in “No Better”, Lorde uses the sweltering heat of summer as a metaphor for heightened emotions. Lorde can’t break off the relationship (there are no controls for an emotional thermostat). Nor does she want to break it off; she wants to “embrace” the passion, the heatwave that’s come over her and her lover.

‘Summer love’ is also a term used to describe a passionate, short but sweet relationship that was intimate and, ultimately, the best time of a persons life. Lorde could be suggesting that this spontaneous relationship with the subject of the song was, to her, like summer love.

Feb. 2017 Update

#2 Pop Genius user, still woo! streetlights might now be ahead of me, but I’ll take that as a challenge to reclaim the title. Either that or I’ll wait until the algorithm changes again. :p

More seriously, I should get to work with annotating, transcribing, and editing.

#1 Pop Genius user, woo!

As long as streetlights doesn’t knock me out of the position, I should be fine. It’s more motivation to edit + annotate + Glorious IQ Bonus claim.

While I don’t IQ farm as much as other power users, I’ve gotten this far with a cross-country approach: endurance. It’s easy to rank up the points when you’ve been annotating for two years.

Scene change! Time has passed, and although the relationship is over, the resentment remains. Her ex has spread gossip about Ellie (maybe in this totally unrelated song).

While the haters might speak of Ellie Goulding, they’re not talking about the real her. The rumors are so unbelievable that Ellie is having trouble relating them to herself at all.

Now it’s Ellie’s turn to fire back. Even though the ex claims it was mad love, it wasn’t the grand romance he’s painted. Perhaps Ellie is a victim of poetic license and overzealous lyrical analysis.

What are you saying? That could never happen!

Tattoos make a statement but they are only skin deep, and at least for Ellie, her love was the same. His tattoos fascinated her more than his personality, even while he pursued her on a more intimate level. Their clashing intentions created anxiety, and some more drinking.

One alleged ex of Ellie’s has lots of tattoos, especially on his arms, so it’s a feature she would’ve noticed quickly.

Very cute!

Even though her partner claimed to be truly in love with her, he’s now lying about the nature of the relationship by telling people another story than hers. It shocks her that he changed his mind so drastically.

“Mess” is a mild way to put it, since her alleged ex, Ed Sheeran, went with a harsher word in his song, Don’t.

Funerals cause people to feel sad, hence why Joe compares his really sad lover to people in a funeral.

These lines also use a popular walking expression, “cold feet”, which means a person’s too afraid to dive into a situation. ‘Tiptoeing’ shows a cautious nature: Joe’s lover might hesitate in getting romantic, but Joe guides her through. It’s like he says, ‘Oh no! You don’t seem fine or happy girl. You are not willing to have sex with me.’

Please let it be “Magnets”, so we can see Lorde in a Disclosure video. (Although it’d be fine if she gets one of those “colored silhouette” videos too.)
