This is a misleading headline, which the subsequent subhead contradicts. The headline implies that Hillary Clinton herself started the birther controversy.

In reality, some of her supporters pushed the theory, and she never condone them. I can’t verify whether Clinton’s supporters “are largely to blame for starting it,” but it’s figures such as Donald Trump who promoted birtherism in the mainstream.

So unless there’s some unknown correspondence from Clinton asking other parties to fuel birtherism, I wouldn’t take this article’s headline at face value, since even the main text tears down the implied meaning.

The article proceeds not to grace “Manta Ray” with a prediction. It says a lot about Billboard’s lack of faith in this song.

The #OscarsSoWhite criticism resurfaced in light of the 2016 Oscars nomination, Publications like HuffPo joined in quickly.

I’m proud of this one, since I did some good annotation work. As part of 2015’s best-selling record, Genius' users definitely showed up for our “Hello” analysis.

At 2.6 million views and counting, “Hello” will be one of Pop Genius' most-viewed songs for a long time–until we hit critical mass.

Last year, the Academy nominated Rita Ora’s “Grateful”, which Diane Warren co-wrote. However, Rita Ora in America Syndrome might’ve ruined the song’s chances, both on Ora’s and her label’s lack of marketing.

Since Lady Gaga performed “Til It Happens to You” several times already, and the song has a music video, the Oscar voters will know Warren’s nomination better this year.

It’s a Bond ballad by Sam Smith. That’s Oscar bait to you.

That said, I don’t think this should win. Especially in the shadow of Adele’s “Skyfall”, Sam’s theme comes off as a noodle with little tension, and little joy. No wonder the U.S. hasn’t embraced this song even when the label sent it to radio.

At least “See You Again” isn’t in the running, so avid hip-hop heads shouldn’t fret. :3

Here’s a Pop Genius favorite. Lady Gaga continues wooing the award show circuit with an Oscar nomination, days after she won an acting Golden Globe.

‘Til your world burns and crashes
'Til you’re at the end, the end of your rope
'Til you’re standing in my shoes
I don’t wanna hear a thing from you

As a devastating ballad on sexual assault, this song has my personal vote.

“Earned It” is the mainstream contender, having played a role in the Weeknd’s breakout. Its pop orchestration and Abel’s sensual vocals makes its case.

Unfortunately for another song on the soundtrack, “Love Me Like You Do”, the Academy sides with Abel, and avoids nominating two songs for the same film.
